There is a very definite process for painting a wooden door – regardless of the wood type, be it pine, oak, hardwood or softwood.
If you are planning on painting or re-painting your exterior wood door (or any of the interior doors in your home) it would be adviseable to follow the process detailed below in order to ensure a perfect finish is achieved.
Step One : If your door has already been hung and you are re-painting it, start by removing it from its hinges and laying it out flat in a clean and spacious work area. If you are painting a brand new wooden door, simply lay it out and you're ready to begin!
Step Two : You will now need to uninstall any door furniture currently fitted to your door, including letterboxes, door handles, locks, or door knockers.
Step Three : You will now need to roughen the surface of your wooden door to ensure your chosen paint will stick. If the door is new it should be completely bare; fine sandpaper should do the trick. If the door has been previously painted, glazed or treated with a sealant of some form, you will need to use a more heavy duty sand paper – you don't necessarily have to remove all the existing paint, you just need to roughen the surface of your wood door so that the paint has some purchase.
Step Four : Wipe down the wood, removing all traces of dirt, dust and wood particles. If you don't do this, the dust and dirt will mix in with your paint causing grainy imperfections in the finish.
Step Five : Now you're ready to apply your undercoat. You will need to ensure every surface of the door is covered with undercoat to guarantee an even, flawless finish.
Step Six : Once the undercoat has dried, apply your top coat or gloss. If the door has glass panels it's a good idea to line the edges with masking tape in order to avoid accidentally smearing paint on to the glass.
Step Seven : Once you have applied the required number of coats, your newly painted wooden door should be looking good. It's now time to re-install the door furniture and hang it back on its hinges. Congratulations, you now have a perfectly undercoated and painted wooden door!
